Today’s machines put on a magnificently disarming show. And the same is true of artificial entities conceived for very different purposes: bots spreading disinformation on social media; bogus personalities designed to debase discourse to a level where machines and humans are indistinguishable; the tirelessly accommodating glamour of AI-generated influencers.

This is the twenty-first-century art of user experience in all its glory: a hall of mirrors within which who and what’s real is, increasingly, impossible to determine. To borrow a phrase from the philosopher Charles Taylor, ours is an age of re-enchantment: its infrastructure suffused with secret purposes, its surfaces concealing fractal depths.13 We are surrounded by exhortations towards magical thinking: by showmanship and social engineering. And this in turn obliges us to look deeper and harder in search of answers: to the racked servers and petabytes of data within which information technology’s magic is truly made.
